Becoming a Social Worker

Looking for a high quality social work course? Look no further!

Kingston University offers two well known routes to qualification: a three year BA Social Work and a two year post graduate MSW.

In addition, they have a Social Work Integrated Degree Apprenticeship. You can find out more here.

Finally, there is also a unique Fast-track Post-Graduate Diploma in Social Work Course which enables employers to sponsor experienced staff to gain a social work qualification within 18 months. Applicants should normally have a 2.1 degree plus a minimum of two years’ experience in social care. For more information, please contact the course leader k.henderson@sgul.kingston.ac.uk

The BA course received 100 per cent overall student satisfaction in the 2018 National Student Survey (NSS).

Kingston University is the Teaching Partnership’s academic partner, meaning they work collaboratively with seven local authorities and two voluntary sector agencies across South West London & Surrey. Benefits to students include being taught in the classroom by Teaching Consultants, who are practising social workers and will bring theory to life with their front-line experiences. Our Teaching Partnership is lucky enough to have over 20 Teaching Consultants; more than enough to go around!

On all programmes you will be taught in the award-winning Practice Learning Suite by well-established and published academics who have practice and research experience in social work, and the Teaching Consultants. You can find out more about this fantastic learning opportunity here.

One of the key advantages to studying within our Teaching Partnership is the access you will have to stimulating and rewarding practice placements in the local region. Placements are allocated in field, residential, day care, hospital, prison and service user-led settings and are supported by our Partnership Practice Consultants and overseen by a group of representatives from across the Partnership to ensure quality and consistency of practice education. More about our Practice Consultants can be found here.

When you are in the final year of your degree course and beginning to think about your first role as a newly-qualified social worker, employment skills workshops are hosted by the Partnership to maximise your chances of securing employment within the Partnership upon completion of your course. These sessions include practical advice and guidance on writing your CV, interview questions and tips, information about upcoming vacancies, and details of what each of Partner has to offer newly qualified social workers. You can find out more about our Partners here.

Kingston University’s MSW course is recognised across the UK and internationally, offering a unique qualification, popular in the United States. You will have the opportunity to take part in an international placement, as well as interdisciplinary learning activities with other health and education professionals from the university. If you are a graduate looking to gain a professional qualification in social work, this two-year course is ideal.

Kingston University will pay for your professional student membership of the British Association of Social Workers during your degree.
On completion of all programmes, you will be eligible to apply to Social Work England to register as a social worker.

If you have a 2:1 degree in a different subject, a minimum of 6 months experience of voluntary or paid work with children, young people or families, and want to specialise in working with children and families, you can apply for the Step-Up to Social Work fast-track programme. Step Up to Social Work is an intensive full-time, fully funded, Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work training programme that allows you to become a qualified social worker in just 14 months. Recruitment for the Step Up to Social Work Cohort 8 Programme will open in mid-February 2023. If you know someone who would be interested, make sure they don’t miss out on their chance to apply to complete the 14 month government funded fast track programme and the opportunity to work in our partnership as a qualified social worker!
