Child to Parent Violence and Abuse (CPV) has been described as the most hidden form of family violence. Whether we think this is true, it has certainly been cloaked in shame through cultural and political narratives. Families report being misunderstood, passed from agency to agency, and even blamed for their own victimisation. Helen’s website and blog ‘Holes in the Wall’ brings together knowledge, resources and people from around the world. It has around 2000 views every month and it has been accessed by individuals in over 100 countries.
In this training session we will examine what we have learnt about CPV over the last 10 years in particular, as it has emerged as an issue which is thought to affect as many as 1 in 10 families with adolescent children. What is meant by CPV? How does it come about? What do we need to think about when working in this field and how can we best support families to bring about healthy and safe relationships?
At the end of the session you should have a better understanding of the impact of child to parent violence and abuse, and will go away with some very practical tips and strategies to support the families you work with.
