South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust’s Annual Mental Health Social Work Conference

On the 9th April the Department of Social Work & Social Care at Kingston University supported South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust in our Annual Mental Health Social Work Conference. It was great day of working in partnership, making connections with social work practitioners and hearing brilliant speakers sharing their expertise.!
The conference was organised and hosted by Emily Brunton & Mears Zoe championing Mental Health Social Work in the Trust. It was delivered in a hybrid format with colleagues joining online and in person, tirelessly BSL interpreted throughout to include everyone joining and contributing. Kingston University contributed by sharing findings from Dr Maria Brent’s research on self-neglect and hoarding behaviours. Aga Buckley shared her current doctoral study to shine a light on compassion fatigue in social work.
Alexis Quinn from Restraint reduction network talked powerfully on the experience of someone with autism in the mental health system. Sam Forrester from the National autistic society strongly highlighted this further with his presentation on mental health act reform for p[people wit autism. Dr George Smukler gave a hugely thought-provoking presentation on the ethics of the mental health act also advocating strongly for reform.
A hugely thought-provoking day for the social workers in the trust. Thank you, Kingston University, and to all who supported us on the day.
